When I use $iint_R f(x,y)dA$
the letter $R$
is to the right of the double integral sign. How to make it under the sign? This is a simple question but I couldn't find a related question.

I don't think this is a good idea, but if you want to have it, you can use underset
:
documentclassstandalone
usepackageamsmath
begindocument
$undersetRiint f(x,y)dA$
enddocument
add a comment |
Apart from JouleV's
nice answer, you can use limits
option to typeset the inline with equation with limits under the integral symbol.
documentclassarticle
usepackageamsmath
begindocument
$iintlimits_a^b f(x,y) , mathrmdA$
enddocument
to get:
Please note that I took the leverage to improve a bit of typesetting ;)
