METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) est un schéma XML développé à l'initiative de la Digital Library Federation (DLF), et autorisant la création et la description intégrale (données descriptives, administratives et structurelles) d'objets numériques textuels ou graphiques. Destiné particulièrement aux échanges entre institutions patrimoniales, METS est conforme aux recommandations de OAIS (Open Archival Information System) et est maintenu actuellement par la Bibliothèque du Congrès.


Un document METS est composé de sept parties distinctes :


  • header (en-tête)

  • descriptive metadata (métadonnées descriptives)

  • administrative metadata (métadonnées administratives)

  • file section (section des fichiers)

  • structural map (carte de structure)

  • structural link (section des liens)

  • behavior (comportement)
